Five employees from Editage attended the JPGM WRITECON 2007 conference on medical writing held at the KEM Hospital in Mumbai, India on the 30th and 31st of March. This conference was organized by the Journal of Postgraduate Medicine, a multidisciplinary quarterly biomedical journal-the official publication of the Staff Society of Seth G. S. Medical College and K. E. M. Hospital. The conference focused on issues related to writing and publication of a medical research paper. The faculty for the program included renowned editors from many Indian and foreign medical journals. The speakers at the conference spoke on various topics ranging from how to write a good discussion section to plagiarism and open access.

One amongst us, Shreya Baliga (ex-Head, Editage), made a presentation at the conference. The presentation entitled "Improving the language quality of manuscripts written by Asian authors-Challenges and insights" spoke about our experience in editing for Asian authors, the challenges we face and how we manage to overcome these challenges. Shreya also gave some suggestions about the roles to be played by the authors' editors, journals, and the research community in general in helping non-native English speakers improve the quality of their manuscripts.

Attending the conference helped us gain a better understanding of the issues related to medical manuscript writing and some of the needs of the research community in India. It also provided us with the opportunity to establish relationships with the editors of some Indian journals. In one way, the conference served as an introduction for Cactus in the medical writing community in India.

Unsurprisingly, some attendees were surprised that a company like ours existed in India!

Cheers.
